“The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation.  Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural."  - Mary Baker Eddy

Born on July 16, 1821, in Bow, New Hampshire, Mary Baker Eddy was a devout Bible student, discoverer and founder of Christian Science and the author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and other writings on Christian Science.

As a child and young adult, Mary Baker Eddy suffered from such severe, chronic health problems that she was a semi-invalid.  After many years of consecrated study of the Scriptures and intense research into many curative systems of healing as well as to solve the many problems in life which she encountered, she began to trace all physical effects to a mental cause which ultimately led her to the discovery that cause and effect is a mental phenomenon and the universe, including man, is the effect, or manifestation, of one universal Cause which she defines as incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love - the synonyms for God.

In February 1866, Mary Baker Eddy suffered a near fatal injury which was pronounced by an attending physician as incurable.  Bedridden and alone with the Bible as her only textbook and authority, she was spontaneously healed through prayer and revelation.  This momentous healing was the beacon that led her to the absolute conclusion that the healings Christ Jesus performed 2,000 years ago were not miraculous, limited to a select few or a specific time but resulted from his perfect understanding, intelligent application and radical reliance on the eternal laws of the divine Principle, God, governing man and the universe with the law of order, harmony and the continuity of being.  She named her discovery Christian Science, Christian because it is based on the words and works of Christ Jesus and draws its authority from the Bible, Science because it is based on universal, unchanging, spiritual law.

For an introduction to Mary Baker Eddy's discovery of the Principle of being which resulted in her extensive and formidable healing ministry, read her autobiography, Retrospection and Introspection, also found in Prose Works, where she recorded the experiences which led her to the discovery of the system that she denominated Christian Science.  This book is available in Christian Science Reading Rooms, bookstores, or call 1-800-877-8400 to purchase a copy.
